Problems with Statins

Statins are prescription medications that reduce blood cholesterol by inhibiting the HMG CoA reductase enzyme in the liver which is necessary for making cholesterol. Statins are indicated for use in a wide range of individuals as they can reduce the risk of developing heart disease, strokes, and angina.

Statins have been widely used over the last 3 decades and have become one of the most prescribed medications on the planet. This is not to say there are not problematic associations with statin. Statins have been linked to major adverse effects following their use. These adverse effects include:

Muscle pain and damage: Severe forms of muscle damage can occur in people taking statins but may be reversed by ceasing treatment with the medication. A more severe form of muscle damage called rhabdomyolysis. This is a serious medical condition that can be fatal or result in permanent disability. Rhabdo occurs when damaged muscle tissue releases its proteins and electrolytes into the blood. When this occurs, these proteins can damage the heart and kidneys and could result in permanent disability or death.

Liver failure: Has been linked to taking statins. It typically occurs in individuals who were at risk of liver damage prior to commencing the drug.

Kidney damage: This usually occurs with rhabdomyolysis and typically occurs in situations where statins are taken in combination with other medications.

Increased risk of type 2 diabetes: Statins can alter the body’s normal processing of blood glucose leading to a elevated risk of type 2 diabetes.

Micronutrient deficiencies: Using statins can also result in deficiencies of certain micronutrients such as coenzyme Q10 and vitamin D which can have effects on the body’s normal metabolism.

Patients can benefit from being on a statin, but given the list of potential problems, you really should work through the options with your doctor and look for alternative methods when possible.
