Chelation therapy is a process in which a synthetic solution EDTA is injected into the blood, with the intent of removing heavy metals such as: lead, copper, aluminum, arsenic and mercury from the blood. The therapy is given over multiple treatments lasting about 30 minutes. Generally speaking, the medication stick to heavy metals and minerals in your bloodstream creating a compound that can be removed through urination. There is some evidence now to suggest chelation therapy may also be used to reduce your risk of heart disease as the medicine is believed to stick to calcium found in atherosclerotic plaque formation within the blood vessel. Other health professionals also suspect that EDTA may be effective in reducing LDL cholesterol, hence reducing the risk of coronary artery disease. It is also thought that EDTA may reduce your risk of chronic inflammatory process to include arthritis and scleroderma as it acts as an antioxidant reducing inflammation.
