Pygeum Health Benefits

Name and Origin

Pygeum is derived from the bark of the African cherry tree, Prunus africana, native to central and southern Africa. Traditionally, it has been used in African medicine to support urinary and reproductive health. With growing scientific interest, Pygeum is now commonly available as a supplement for prostate health, particularly for managing symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Benefits

Pygeum is known for its potential in relieving lower urinary tract symptoms associated with BPH, such as frequent urination, nocturia (nighttime urination), and weak urinary flow. It may improve prostate gland inflammation and ease prostate discomfort. Additionally, Pygeum’s antioxidant properties support overall cell health, potentially reducing oxidative stress. Other uses include symptomatic relief in kidney disease, malaria, stomach ache, and may be helpful in reducing fever as well (White, 2024).

Expanded Health Benefits:

Here are some of the key health benefits associated with pygeum:
 Prostate Health - Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): Pygeum is commonly used to alleviate symptoms associated with BPH, a condition characterized by an enlarged prostate. Studies suggest that pygeum may help reduce urinary symptoms such as frequency, urgency, and nocturia (nighttime urination).

 Urinary Function - Pygeum may help improve urinary flow and reduce the discomfort associated with urination in men with prostate issues. It may also have protective effects on the urinary tract, potentially reducing the risk of infections.

 Anti-inflammatory Properties - Pygeum contains phytosterols and other compounds that may exert anti-inflammatory effects, which could be beneficial for reducing inflammation in the prostate and urinary system.

 Antioxidant Effects - The compounds in pygeum may have antioxidant properties, helping to combat oxidative stress in the body. This can be beneficial for overall health and may play a role in reducing the risk of certain chronic diseases.

 Hormonal Balance - Some studies suggest that pygeum may help regulate hormone levels, particularly testosterone and dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which are involved in prostate health.

 Potential Sexual Health Benefits - There is some evidence to suggest that pygeum may improve sexual function and libido, particularly in men experiencing prostate-related issues.

 Support for Kidney Health - Traditional uses of pygeum also include promoting kidney health, although more research is needed to fully understand this benefit.

Other Names

Pygeum is also known as African plum, African prune, or simply African cherry.

Adverse Reactions

Common side effects include nausea and abdominal pain. Studies suggest that Pygeum is non-toxic to humans (White, 2024). However, it is recommended to be mindful of adverse effects, should there be any, and immediately seek medical attention.

Contraindications

Those who are taking supplements and medications for prostate health should consult their healthcare provider before taking Pygeum. Pregnant and breastfeeding women are also advised to talk to their healthcare provider before using this supplement due to insufficient safety data (Pygeum, 2024).

Drug Interactions

Although data is lacking. Pygeum may interact with certain medications which is why it is best to consult a healthcare provider if taking any prescription drugs to avoid potential interactions.

Dose

Pygeum is available in various forms, including capsules, tablets, and extracts. For BPH, the typical recommended dose of Pygeum is 75–200 mg/day (Cunha, n.d.). Follow dosage instructions on product labels.
