Health Benefits of Vitamin K

Vitamin K is a fat-soluble vitamin that is essential for the appropriate functioning of the body. The primary source of obtaining vitamin K is by ingesting it as part of a balanced diet, as it can be found in leafy greens, some animal products, and fermented foods.

There are several health benefits of vitamin K as it functions in different roles in the body, including:

Blood clotting: One of the biggest roles of vitamin K in the body is blood clotting, which is essential as it is the mechanism the body uses to stop bleeding after an injury or a wound. It is also indicated for use in individuals who have been prescribed blood thinners such as warfarin as part of the management of their health condition, as it is able to counteract the effects of these medications in cases of overdose.

Bone building: One of the functions of vitamin K is the production of osteocalcin which works to prevent the weakening of bones. Several studies have shown that individuals with a higher intake of vitamin K have higher bone density and are less likely to experience bone fractures.

Heart health: Vitamin K can help improve heart health and reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering blood pressure. It does this by preventing the age-related build-up of minerals in the arteries which can lead to their calcification or hardening. This reduced mineral build-up means the heart can better function to pump blood around the body for longer periods.

Improve cognition: Several studies have shown that elderly individuals with a higher intake of vitamin K have better episodic memory recall.

Improved insulin sensitivity: Vitamin K also plays a role in insulin production and sensitivity, and as such has been linked to increased insulin sensitivity and decreased risk of diabetes.

Reduction of cancer risk: Vitamin K is known to inhibit the growth of cancer cells as it has been linked to decreased rates of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in patients with liver cirrhosis. It has also been shown to decrease the incidence of HCC recurrence in patients who are in remission.
