Health Benefits of Shiitake Mushroom

Shiitake are edible mushrooms that are native to East Asia. They are tan to dark brown, with caps that grow between 2 and 4 inches (5 and 10 cm). This mushroom type also known as Lentinula edodes, is popular around the world for its taste and ease of cultivation. They find use as both food and in traditional medicine owing to their high nutritional property.

Health Benefits of Shiitake Mushroom

Shiitake mushrooms have several health benefits as a result of their nutritional property. These benefits include:

b) Improve heart health- Shiitake mushrooms contain eritadenine and beta-glucans. These compounds reduce cholesterol levels in the blood, reduce inflammation and help prevent the intestines from absorbing cholesterol.
c) Protect brain health - Shiitake mushrooms have proven to help balance hormones naturally whilst improving cognitive performance. They are a great source of B vitamins, which help support adrenal function.
d) Increase Vitamin D levels - Shiitake indeed carries modest levels of vitamin D in the form of ergocalciferol (Vit.D2). 100 grams contain about 18 IU of vitamin D. It is an essential fat-soluble vitamin required for bone growth and calcium metabolism.
e) Promote gut health - The fiber content in Shiitake has been found through studies to support digestive and gut health by inhibiting inflammation in the gut.
