Health Benefits of Fennel Oil

Fennel oil is an essential oil derived by steam distillation of dried fruits of Foeniculum vulgare (fennel) which is a highly aromatic and flavorful herb with diverse culinary and medicinal purposes. The oil appears pale-yellow to brownish-yellow and is often characterized by its sweet, green spicy, earthy scent. The oil is majorly composed of Anethole and fenchone.

What are some health benefits of Fennel Oil?

Due to its medicinal characteristic, fennel oil and its seeds are continuously being used by many in the treatment of certain ailments. Some of its health benefits include:
~ Relieve Gas and Constipation: Fennel essential oil can be of assistance in providing the bowel with relief by getting rid of constipation, gas, and bloating thereby ensuring comfort. The fennel seed is recognized as a powerful digestive stimulant that can act as a laxative upon ingestion.
~ Antimicrobial Properties: Fennel Oil is a high, antioxidant compound with vast antimicrobial properties. Fennel extract possesses antibacterial and antifungal properties which are capable of inhibiting the growth of potentially pathogenic bacteria and yeasts.
~ Helps with weight loss: Fennel plays an age-long role in boosting metabolism while suppressing appetite which ultimately results in weight loss. Furthermore, fennel helps minimize fat deposits in the bloodstream by utilizing stored energy sources.
~ Appetite-suppressant: Due to the presence of Anethole, a significant component of Fennel oil, it is suspected to be behind the appetite-suppressing qualities of the plant.
~ Anti-Inflammatory: Fennel possesses powerful antioxidants such as Vitamin C, Anethole, and quercetin, that can reduce inflammation. This may soothe intestinal irritations and swelling and further improve digestion.
~ Help with menstrual symptoms: Fennel oil is significantly effective in easing menstrual cramps (dysmenorrhea). If taken orally, it improves the pain with similar effects in its function to drugs like ibuprofen.

What Are the Side Effects?

Generally, fennel oil is safe to use. However, just like most natural oils, fennel oil contains powerful chemicals which can be detrimental if used in excess. Fennel oil contains trans-anethole which is believed to have estrogen-like activity, which may interfere with the growth and development of the fetus. Other adverse reactions such as itching, irritation, swelling, or hives while using the oil, have also been noted.

How Much Do I Take?

When you think of taking fennel oil, its usage depends solely on the purpose for which you are taking it.
i. Aromatic usage: Use three to four drops.
ii. Internal usage: Dilute a drop of this essential oil in four fluid ounces of liquid.
iii. Topical use: Apply one or two drops of fennel oil to the desired area.

What Are Some Drug Interactions?

Taking birth control pills alongside fennel can reduce the effect of the birth control pills due to their ability to affect the estrogen level. The intake of large amounts of fennel may affect estrogen levels in the body. Taking fennel alongside tamoxifen might decrease the effects of tamoxifen.
Fennel may slow blood clotting and taking it along with medications that slow blood clotting increases the risk of bleeding and bruising. Fennel may reduce the absorption of Ciprofloxacin in the body, and taking Ciprofloxacin together with fennel may reduce the effectiveness of Ciprofloxacin.
