Chaga mushroom is a fungus that grows primarily on birch trees in cold climates. They do not taste like traditional mushrooms, instead, they have a bitter yet vanilla taste. They are also high in fiber and low in calories. With an appearance similar to burnt charcoal, it has been harvested for centuries as a traditional medicine.
What are some benefits of Chaga Mushrooms?
Ongoing scientific research reveals that Chaga mushroom extract may provide the following health benefits to users:
• Boosts the Immune System: These mushrooms have helped to boost the immune system by increasing the production of certain immune cells, helping to regulate the immune system, and making sure that your body is fighting off any invading bacteria and viruses.
• Anti-inflammatory: When the body is fighting off an illness, inflammation acts as a defense mechanism against infection. However, sometimes inflammation can damage the body or even develop into a chronic condition, such as rheumatoid arthritis, heart disease, or autoimmune diseases.
• Fights Cancer: Chaga mushrooms are a rich source of antioxidants, which can prevent cell damage caused by free radicals or oxidative stress. Oxidative stress can cause cancer, as well as several other health problems. One study found that Chaga extract could slow the growth of lung, breast, and cervical cancer cells in a petri dish.
• Glucose Control: Several animal studies link chaga to lower blood sugar levels. Therefore, it may help manage diabetes. In a study in diabetic mice, Chaga supplements led to a 31% decrease in blood sugar levels over three weeks. Similar results have been seen in other studies.
• Enhances endurance: In animal studies, this mushroom has significantly improved physical endurance. One study published in 2015 found that when mice were given chaga mushroom polysaccharides, the mice were able to swim longer, the glycogen (fuel) content of both muscles and liver increased, while lactic acid levels in the bloodstream decreased. Chaga mushroom, therefore, has shown promise as a recipe for less fatigue and better endurance.
Side effects and possible drug interactions of Chaga mushroom
As with other supplements and medications, Chaga carries some risks. It can also trigger side effects and may interact dangerously with some medications. Chaga lowers blood sugar, so it can be unsafe for people taking insulin and other blood-sugar-lowering medications. Chaga extract may also inhibit platelet aggregation, according to rodent studies. Platelet aggregation is a measure of how well a person’s blood cells clump together, which is essential for clotting. As a result, it may interfere with anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs.
