GINSENG

What is it?

Ginseng is a slow-growing plant that has a light-colored fork-shaped fleshy root. The root of ginseng restores overall well-being by working to enhance energy and exerting other health-promoting effects on the body. It has been used as a herbal supplement in traditional Chinese medicine for centuries.

What are its benefits?

The following benefits are attributed to ginseng use (Nordqvist, 2021):

• Restores and improves energy
• Lowers blood sugar levels
• Lowers cholesterol levels
• Boosts immune response
• Reduces stress
• Treats diabetes
• Treats erectile dysfunction
• Holds anti-inflammatory properties (Im, 2020)
• Prevents flu
• It may improve cognition as well (Jakaria, 2018)

How should I take it?

Using ginseng in small doses is said to be safe. You can eat the root raw or stir-fry it, add ginseng in soups or make tea with it. The supplements should be checked before purchasing to ensure that they offer a quality product. And always consult with a doctor first before trying any new supplement.

Who should not take it?

People who take the MAOI class of anti-depressants should refrain from using ginseng as it moderately interacts with the drug (Nordqvist, 2021).

People who take medications for heart, diabetes, blood pressure, and blood-thinning medicines should also not use it on their own as it may alter the effects of these drugs (Nordqvist, 2021).
