Benefits of Berberine Supplement

Berberine is a natural compound found in plants such as goldenseal, Oregon grape, and turmeric. It has been used for many years within Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine as a highly effective treatment for several conditions. This is because berberine is able to penetrate the cells to make changes with little to no side effects.

There are several benefits associated with berberine supplementation, these include:

• Management of blood sugar and diabetes: Berberine has been shown to reduce blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. It functions similar to diabetic medication metformin by activating an enzyme called AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK). The result of this is an improvement in the effectiveness of circulating insulin, an increase in the breakdown of body sugars, a reduction in the production of sugars in the liver and gut, and an increase in the number of gut bacteria. Berberine supplementation can be used as part of any diabetic management including lifestyle changes and medication therapy.

• Cholesterol management: Berberine has also been shown to reduce the number of triglycerides and low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, both of which are associated with increased risks of heart disease and strokes. It has also been shown to increase the amount of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol which has heart-protective effects.

• Reduction in cancer risk: Berberine has been shown to inhibit the growth and spread of cancers such as those of the lung, colorectum, ovary, prostate, liver, and cervix.

• Dosage and How to take: Clinical studies have evaluated berberine (berberine HCl) at dosages ranging from 900 to 1,500 milligrams per day. The most common and most effective dosage appears to be 500 milligrams three times per day for a total of 1,500 milligrams per day. Since berberine has a short half-life, it should be taken with a meal, or shortly after. High doses taken acutely may cause gastrointestinal discomfort, cramping and/or diarrhea.
