Cloves are flower buds from Syzygium aromaticum plant in the Myrtaceae family.1 Native to Indonesia, currently cultivated in Asia and South America. Clove plants can either be used in whole or a combination of parts to make medicine. Clove is a highly regarded as an aromatic and sweet spice and has been used for decades for food preservation and medical reasons .The components majorly used from the clove planr include; the dried flower buds, leaves and stems.
Clove possesses rich phenolic compounds, which include eugenol, gallic acid, and eugenol acetate. These compounds are essential for the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, and agricultural-based industries.2
This herb has proven helpful in complementary medicine. It has helped in preventing premature ejaculation by the application of Clove in combination with other compounds at the outermost skin of the penis before copulation. It is also known for its richness in antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins. These amazing benefits have been used in Chinese Medicine for boosting immunity, lowering inflammation, and hastening digestion.3 Clove oil has been used in killing parasites and as an insect repellant. Eugenol plays a significant role in this because it is an effective germicide.
Eugenol compound found in cloves slows down blood clotting. Therefore, consumption of clove oil could cause bleeding in individuals with blood clotting anomalies. In children, oil derived from clove herb is likely to be unsafe if ingested. It can result in liver dysfunction, convulsions, and imbalances in body fluids.
