Cat's claw (Uncaria Tomentosa) is a medicinal plant derivative of a tropical vine as a herbal supplement. Cat's claw was initially found in existence in the Amazon rainforest and tropical areas in South and Central America and, of recent, Europe. The standard varieties mostly used are; Uncaria tomentosa and Uncaria guianensis. Cats' claw is intrinsically complex and contains a lot of phytochemical components. Cat's claw supplements take various forms; the capsules, powder form, as tea, and liquid extracts.1
Cat's Claws roots and the barks have been used for centuries as the traditional medicine for cancer, viral infections, menstrual disorders, and gastric ulcers.2 The most used part of the Cat's Claws plant is the root and bark. The root contains an alkaloid content of 10 times higher than the bark. The alkaloid mitraphylline occurring in Cat's claw is hence its use as an antidepressant.
The high levels of tannins in the Cat's claw may cause vomiting, headache, dizziness in diarrhea, stomach upset in some people. Other symptoms include slow blood clotting, blood pressure, and increasing the risk of overbreeding. Cat's claw is not recommended for use by pregnant and lactating women.
