Astragalus is a plant in the legume family known as milkvetch or huáng qí for its widespread use in traditional Chinese medicine. Among 2000 species of Astragalus, only two, namely Astragalus membranaceus and Astragalus mongholicus, are used as supplements.1
The root of Astragalus is made in various forms such as capsules, liquid extracts, powders, and teas. At times it is given as an Intravenous injection in hospitals. The roots contain active compounds that strengthen the immune system, reduce inflammation, and treat various allergies.
In traditional Chinese, Astragalus is considered a miracle herb that can boost energy levels, reduce stress and fight off other diseases.
Astragalus has been used in traditional Chinese medicine for hundreds of years. It is famous for a variety of health benefits such as immune-boosting, anti-aging, and anti-inflammatory effects. It is used to treat various ailments such as allergies, common cold, fatigue, heart diseases, kidney diseases, diabetes, etc.
It is also used to treat breast cancer, hepatitis, lung cancer, upper respiratory infections, asthma, and nervous conditions, lowering blood pressure and blood sugar.2 Studies have shown Astragalus stimulates the liver, spleen, lungs, urinary and circulatory system.
Nursing, pregnant women, people with organ transplants, and people with autoimmune diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and multiple sclerosis should not use astragalus root.2
