What are the symptoms of RLS?

The major symptom of RLS is the urge to move the legs, although the common accompanying characteristics may include:
• A sensation of electric shock in the extremities
• Feeling of constant tugging or pulling
• The crawling feeling in the extremities
• Chronic nighttime leg twitching: RLS may be associated with another, a more common condition called periodic limb movement of sleep.

What are the possible causes of restless leg syndrome?

Some experts have suggested that it may be caused by a chemical imbalance such as dopamine. Patients with hypothyroidism, iron deficiency, kidney failure, spinal cord conditions, diabetes, and peripheral neuropathy have been closely associated with this condition.
Sometimes RLS runs in families, especially if the condition starts before age 40. Researchers have identified sites on the chromosomes where genes for RLS may be present.

What are the self-care remedies?

• Magnesium supplement: there is strong evidence that magnesium deficiencies can contribute to RLS. Taking a daily magnesium supplement may help reduce symptoms and improve sleep quality. Recommended Daily use 400 mg for men and 320 mg for adult women.
• Warm bath: soaking in a warm bath and massaging the legs can help relax the muscles. Use of heat or cold, or alternating the two, may lessen the limb sensations.
• Avoid caffeine: limiting the intake of caffeine may help restless legs. Try to avoid caffeine-containing products, including chocolate, tea, coffee, and soft drinks.
• Exercise: getting moderate, regular exercise may help relieve symptoms of RLS, but overdoing it or working out too late may worsen the symptoms.
• Establish good sleep hygiene as fatigue tends to worsen symptoms of RLS.
• Smoking cessation.
