Monkey Pox

What is it?

Monkeypox is a zoonotic viral disease, so named because it was discovered in 1958 among colonies of monkeys bred for research. Although quite prevalent in African countries, the strain that is at large globally is less severe than the one found in African countries. It mostly presents with flu-like symptoms accompanied by rash and swollen lymph nodes.

Where are most cases of monkeypox found in the world?

As of 12th July 2022, the total number of cases of monkeypox globally stands at 10,611. Spain is leading the other countries by 2447 cases, closely followed by the United Kingdom with 1735 cases (2022 Monkeypox Outbreak Global Map, 2022).

How many known cases are in the U.S?

The United States currently has around 929 reported cases of monkeypox (2022 U.S. Map & Case Count, 2022). New York City is leading the other states by reporting 158 cases.

How is it contracted commonly?

Monkeypox is contracted whenever someone comes in close contact with an infected person or animal. Skin-to-skin, mouth-to-mouth, mouth-to-skin, and face-to-face are some of the modes of transmission of the virus. Therefore, people can get infected during sexual contact, and an infected mother can pass it on to the baby while giving birth. The infected person’s lesions and respiratory droplets are infectious as well. The virus can be contracted by touching inanimate objects such as bedsheets, electronic items, etc., that have been touched by an infected person (Monkeypox, 2022). Caution should be exercised with regards to coming in contact with rodents and non-human primates like monkeys as they may harbor the virus.

Why are most people protected through prior vaccines like the smallpox vaccine?

One of the vaccines for smallpox has been approved for preventing monkeypox. However, vaccination is offered to high-risk cases only (Monkeypox, 2022). The monkeypox virus is a member of the same family as the smallpox virus. Although milder, the symptoms of monkeypox are very similar to smallpox symptoms. In past studies, the smallpox virus should effect against monkeypox but due to the data being limited to report anything with certainty, more clinical trials are needed to be sure of these vaccines.

Curiously, there are 2 new vaccines approved by FDA in 2019 — the Jynneos shot, which was approved by the FDA in 2019, and ACAM2000.
