Importance of Antioxidants

Antioxidants are substances that can prevent or slow damage to cells caused by free radicals, unstable molecules that the body produces as a reaction to environmental and other pressures. Antioxidants, generally speaking, are substances that help to prevent oxidation or oxidative stress.

Factors that increase the production of free radicals in the body can be internal, such as inflammation, or external, for example, pollution, UV exposure, and cigarette smoke. Oxidative stress has been linked to heart disease, cancer, arthritis, stroke, respiratory diseases, immune deficiency, emphysema, Parkinson’s disease, and other inflammatory or ischemic conditions.

Free radicals cause damage to our bodies resulting in chronic inflammation, including heart disease and cancer. Antioxidants help decrease the harmful effects of these free radicals and reduce the risk of chronic inflammation.

Where Do We Get Antioxidants in Our Diets?

Some of the best antioxidants come from foods like blueberries, carrots, and leafy green vegetables. Greens are also full of antioxidants. Other good sources of antioxidants include: artichokes, strawberries, raspberries, green and black teas, red grapes, dark chocolate, pomegranates, and goji berries.

Best antioxidants supplements.

Selenium is a wonderful antioxidant 100 to 200 mcg daily. Vitamin C is highly effective in neutralizing free radicals; considered about 500 to 1000 mg daily. Vitamin E is approximately 100 to 200IU. Other powerful antioxidants are found in curcumin, lycopene, quercetin, and vitamin A.

Best antioxidants foods.

At the same time, abundant evidence suggests that eating whole fruits, and vegetables, protects against many scourges of aging. Consuming fruits (while in season) and vegetables has been linked to a lower rate of chronic diseases, and antioxidants play a role. It is unlikely however to gain the required antioxidants in processed or fast. Anyone taking additional antioxidant supplements should speak with their health provider.
