Omega-3 fatty acids/oils.
Omega-3 fatty acids have been shown to help delay or reduce the development of certain cancers, specifically breast and prostate cancer. Studies show that when combining vitamin D3 with omega-3 fatty acids, there is a cumulative reduction in cancer risks. Some important oils to consider include olive oil and flaxseed oil which are found to reduce the growth and spread of certain cancers like colorectal cancers. In one study, diet high in olive oil was associated with a 50% risk reduction in colorectal cancers.
Ginger
Ginger is a spice with a strong taste and well documented healing properties. Specifically, several compounds have been extracted from ginger to include gingerols, shogoals, zingiberene, and zingerone to evaluate them for their effectiveness against several cancers. These compounds have been shown to inhibit invasion and motility of triple negative breast cancer, as well as reduce hormone receptor positive cell growth and proliferation. Ginger has also been shown to have cytotoxic effects against stomach, cervical, colorectal, leukemia, liver, lung, nasopharyngeal, ovarian, prostate and brain cancers. Ginger has been shown to inhibit growth of certain cancer cells by interrupting their cell-cycle progression and impairing cancer reproduction.
Finally, ginger has also been shown to have some benefits regarding indigestion/gas, diarrhea, arthritis, and appetite stimulant.
Green Tea
Green tea is high in EGCG/epigallocatechin gallate which is known to retard the growth of several cancers. Green tea also helps to prevent the development of cancer as well as killing developing cancerous cells. EGCG is known to inhibit the spread of certain cancer cells, and specifically known to reduce the recurrence of breast cancer.
Selenium
There is increasing evidence for the efficacy of certain forms of selenium as cancer-chemopreventive compounds. It is one of the 8 necessary trace elements humans require for active health balance. Selenium functions as a potent antioxidant, enhances carcinogen detoxification, increases programmed cell death of abnormal cells, as well as inhibitions tumor cell invasion.
Selenium also appears to have a protective effect at various stages of carcinogenesis including both the early and later stages of cancer progression. Low levels of selenium have been linked to several cancers to include lung, stomach, bladder, ovaries, pancreas, thyroid, esophagus, head / neck, and melanoma.
Turmeric(Curcumin).
Turmeric, which contains the active ingredient curcumin, is known to reduce inflammation. Inflammation is the root of many disease to include cancer; specifically colorectal and breast cancer. The curcumin in turmeric is noted to decrease swelling, and inflammation. Curcumin is being studied as a method to prevent cancer in people with some pre-cancerous conditions. Turmeric has also shown to prevent and slow the spread of cancer.
Sunshine and Vitamin D3/K2
Well documented history of probiotics, vitamin D3/K2, and omega-3 fish oil are protective supplements against colon cancer. These tend to reduce overall inflammation which is protective against several different types of malignancies.
Vitamin E
Current studies proposed that vitamin E acts as a powerful antioxidant protecting against cancer in in-vitro, in-vivo, and clinical studies. Vitamin E is a lipid soluble vitamin comprising of 8 natural isoforms making it a suitable candidate as an alternative treatment for cancer due to its antioxidant properties. Vitamin E functions to scavenge reactive nitrogen species in addition to reactive oxygen species. The association between vitamin E and cancer risk is now focusing on the good effects against several common cancers to include prostate and colorectal cancers.
Probiotic Foods
Your gut contains more than 100 trillion symbiotic bacteria species which are present to help manage, intestinal health and improve your immune system. The idea behind these probiotics is to detect and neutralize cells that could become cancerous. Additionally, some probiotics, are thought to influence substrates which promote the growth of beneficial bacteria and indirectly help to reduce pro-inflammatory markers. Some cancers known to have beneficial effects from probiotics, include cervical, breast, and colon cancer. Probiotics are also important in management of diarrhea, treat in inflammatory bowel disease, and the treatment of urinary tract infections. Probiotics may also be used to enhance other diagnostic and therapeutic methods.
Choose a probiotic formulation with a minimum of 30 billion Colony Forming Units (CFUs) and include the following strains:
Bifidobacterium Bifidum
Saccharomyces Boulardii
Lactobacillus Plantarum
Lactobacillus Rhamnosus
Some probiotics foods include miso, tempeh, pickled vegetables, sauerkraut, and kimchi.
Vitamin C
Vitamin C (Ascorbic acid) is a water-soluble vitamin, which helps to keep your body healthy. It is one of those vitamins that the body cannot make on its own so it must be obtained from foods that we eat like fresh vegetables and berries. Vitamin C is important in the growth and repair of body tissues to include skin, cartilage, ligament, and blood vessels. Also important is that vitamin C works as an antioxidant to protect against oxidative damage from free radicals. Vitamin C is also thought to prevent and treat certain cancers, such as non-small cell, lung cancer, skin cancer, cervical cancer, and prostate cancer. At higher doses there is some suggestion that it suppresses metastasis from breast cancer. Vitamin C also plays a role in heart disease, blood pressure management, the common cold, arthritis, and asthma.
Some other excellent sources of vitamin C would include grapefruit, broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower, and cabbage.
Usually 1000 mg in the morning for most adults is adequate.
Magnesium
Magnesium is a critical mineral that is involved in over 600 enzymatic reactions. Despite this fact, about 60% of Americans are deficient in magnesium, including up to 60% of patients who are critically ill. Adequate magnesium levels have been shown to improve the ability of the immune system to eliminate infected and cancerous cells. Magnesium is also vitally important in brain, heart, and skeletal muscle functions. Several studies have also demonstrated an association between high magnesium intake and reduced risk of colorectal cancer. Magnesium deficiency is associated with a variety of diseases and is an important predictive factor in the immune system's ability to tackle cancer cells. Other studies show that magnesium improves the ability of the immune system to eliminate infected and cancerous cells.
