Flatulence is a problem caused by gas build-up causing discomfort when one eats certain foods, leading to releasing gases via the anus. It is also referred to as having gas, passing wind, or farting. Gas in the digestive tract results from swallowing air when eating or drinking or due to food digestion releasing digestive gases such as methane, carbon dioxide, and hydrogen. Chewing gum, eating too quickly, smoking, taking carbonated drinks, eating beans, cabbage, prunes, apples, and foods with high sorbitol and fructose content increases the risk of flatulence.
Peppermint oil helps relieve indigestion, ease irritable bowel syndrome and flatulence by relaxing the stomach muscles, which allows the body to allow the air, food particles, and liquids that would be stuck through. The oil naturally occurring in peppermint accelerates your metabolism, thus reducing excessive acidity. Additionally, peppermint processes antispasmodic and relaxant characteristics that alleviate spasms and cramps in the intestines, gallbladder, and bile duct; this leads to the smooth flow of food. A cup of peppermint tea reduces bloating after meals to relieve indigestion.
Boil the water in a pot, add the peppermint leaves, and leave them infused for at least 10minutes. Strain the leaves and drink when hot.
