Menstrual cramps, also known as dysmenorrhea, are a discomfort on your abdomen and lower back when menstruating caused by the contractions of the uterus days before and during your period. Menstrual cramps are characterized by headaches, nausea, diarrhea, and continuous pain. The pain starts days before your period, and the peak onset of your period, subsiding in 2 days. Menstrual cramps occur naturally and subside with age, improving after giving birth. Other causes include; uterine fibroids, pelvic inflammatory disease, cervical stenosis, and endometriosis. In some women, the cramps disrupt their normal activities for days.
Heat causes a relaxing effect on the myometrium, the middle layer of the uterine wall. Heat therapy is beneficial in relieving menstrual pain by increasing the blood flow to the uterus. A heating pad will help you relax uterus muscles, allowing ease of menstrual cramps boosting blood circulation in the abdomen.
Start with the lowest heat setting on your heating pad. While increasing the heat, make sure to wrap the heating pad with a towel. This will protect you from skin burns. Then, apply the heat for 20 minutes.
