Heartburn is the feeling of having a burning chest and a bitter taste in the mouth right after eating, worsening when bending or lying down. It results from the refluxing back of acid into the esophagus, causing a burning pain in the chest. Foods and drinks triggering heartburn include fried foods, spicy foods, chocolate, carbonated and caffeinated drinks. Acid reflux causes Gastroesophageal reflux disease(GERD) that occurs more than twice a week.
Licorice contains glycyrrhizin compounds responsible for its anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Licorice has a sweet taste and, when ingested, helps increase mucous coating on the esophagus and the stomach lining, reducing the burning effect of stomach acid and accelerating the healing of damaged tissues. It has soothing properties on the gastrointestinal tract hence its use as a remedy for heartburn.
For every cup of water, add one tablespoon of Licorice root and boil the mixture. Let the tea simmer for 20 minutes, and then cool it for five minutes. Drink when warm.
