Constipation is an ailment in the gastrointestinal tract caused by consuming low fiber diets, failing to drink enough fluids, medical conditions, inactivity, or taking medications that make it challenging to have regular bowel movements. Constipation is characterized by having fewer than three bowel movements in a week, dry and hard stool that is painful and difficult to pass due to water absorption by the colon from the stool. Constipation is common in pregnant women, babies, and people who have advanced in age.
Prunes contain cellulose, an insoluble fiber that causes an increase in the amount of water in the stool. Sorbitol contained in prunes aids in loosening and softening the stool by drawing water lost in the colon. The chemical substance dihydrophenylisation present in prune helps stimulate the movement in the intestines, further pushing the stool. In addition, the phenolic compounds in prunes have a laxative effect as they cause stimulation in the production of healthy gut bacteria that promotes the consistency of food in the body, preventing and treating constipation.
Add water to prunes in a saucepan and bring to boil. Simmer the solution for about 10 minutes in reduced heat. Let it cool. Serve it chilled.
