While it is not proven that Vitamin D can cure COVID, experts believe that high levels of vitamin D can put us at a lower risk for COVID hospitalization according to Healthline. A study that looked at 216 COVID patients found that 80 percent of people did not have adequate levels of serum vitamin D. These patients were also known to have higher number of inflammatory markers, such as ferritin and D-dimer, which generally resulted in poor COVID infection outcomes. These conditions were commonly seen in ICU/COVID patients; having low vitamin D levels. "A different study found that COVID-19 patients who had adequate vitamin D levels had a 51.5 percent lower risk of dying from the disease", added Healthline. Another study by the Mayo Clinic, that looked at 489 people found that those who had a vitamin D deficiency were more likely to test positive for the virus that causes COVID-19 than people who had normal levels of vitamin D.
Suggested adult dose is 1000 to 2000 IU to begin with. It is however important that you see your provider to have your vitamin D level checked to be certain this amount is adequate.
