MELATONIN

The increased prevalence of sleep disorders has also been heightened in the recent months due to COVID-19 pandemic. This is important to know as sleep controls many aspects of our metabolism to include our mood, and helps prevent cardiovascular disease. Additionally, adequate sleep has well-known effects on memory and is vitally important in calibrating our immune system. That being said, fatigue or lack of adequate sleep can quickly turn a mild case of any disease into a life-threatening scenario. COVID-19 has already sickened thousands and brought the global economy to its breaking point. But there is help.

Melatonin, known as the sleep hormone has been postulated to potentially become blocked by Light. The production of this hormone increases during dark hours with strong influences on our circadian rhythm. Essentially melatonin acts as a moderator to help keep our self-protective responses in tune which in turns limits the diseases impacting multiple cell types, tissues and organs. While short-term use of melatonin is thought to be safe in healthy adults, it can boost blood sugar, so it is not recommended for people with diabetes. Taking too much can also lead to nightmares, fatigue, and exhaustion. If you decide to try melatonin, consider taking 3 mg nightly.
