Being at high risk for the COVID19 virus has to do with having underlying diseases that weaken your immune system such as lungs and heart diseases, cancer and certain blood disorders. People in their 50s are at higher risk than someone in their 40s. People in their 60s or 70s are, in general, at higher risk for severe illnesses than people in their 50s and so on. The risk of developing dangerous symptoms increases with age, with the greatest risk for severe illness from COVID-19 being those aged 85 or older. Young Black and Hispanic men and women are more at risk than their white counterparts.
As you increase in age, so does the possibility of you succumbing to COVID19 if infected. According to the Mayo Clinic, 80% of deaths from the COVID19 virus has been from those who are 65 and older. Older people and people with pre-existing medical conditions (such as diabetes, high blood pressure, lung disease, or cancer) should take extra precautions including hand washing, disinfecting frequently and staying home as much as possible.
Since the coronavirus is targeted towards the lungs, having severe lung disease makes you more likely to have complications from COVID-19. Additionally, you are at higher risk for more severe symptoms if you have lung conditions such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) while suffering from other conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. You should stay on your prescription, get plenty sleep and maintain your hygiene.
Cardiomyopathy, pulmonary hypertension, congenital heart disease, and coronary artery disease are all conditions that put you at a higher risk of illness from COVID-19. Type 2 Diabetes, severe obesity, and others are all factors that contribute to placing you at higher risks than others in the population.
