Clove bud oil is an essential oil extracted from the Syzygium aromaticum plant native to Southern Asia, a tropical plant characterized by clusters of crimson flowers and large oval leaves growing to a height of 10-20m. Today, the leading producers of cloves are Madagascar and Indonesia.
The bud oil is extracted from the dried flower buds Eugenia caryophyllus through a process of steam distillation. The main constituent being Eugenol containing 60-90%. The oil is rich in fragrance known for its intense floral scent hence its use in aromatherapy. Clove bud oil occurs as a clear to yellow color that changes with age to brown.1
For centuries, dentists have been using clove bud oil to dress minor oral wounds, for general oral hygiene, and the treatment of oral infectious diseases as well as an analgesic. In dentistry, clove bud oil has been used as an analgesic in relieving toothaches, treating mouth ulcers and dental pain.2
Clove bud oil has been used as a food preservative in the cosmetic industry, and for medicinal purposes. The need for natural preservatives for semi and processed foods food promoted Clove bud oil as a non-toxic preservative.3For medicinal purposes, Clove bud oil has been used to treat rheumatoid arthritis to relieve joint pains, improve blood circulation, and reduce discomfort such as headaches, improve digestion, and soothe skin irritation. Additionally, clove bud oil is used in aromatherapy as a weed killer and to clean metals.
Other components include; ester, a- caryophyllene, isoeugenol, and methyl Eugenol.
Clove oil contains Eugenol, a chemical compound that slows down blood clotting therefore not recommended for use by persons with bleeding disorders. It might cause slow blood clotting. Not recommended for persons with sensitive skin as it might irritate when applied to the skin.
