QUERCETIN

Quercetin is a plant pigment known as flavonoid found as a dietary supplement and naturally occurring in grains, fruits, wines, tea, and vegetables, thus common in onions, red wine, berries, peppers, tomatoes, cherries, green tea, and kale.

Quercetin was identified as a top contender in the fight against the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) due to its multifaceted attributes. Quercetin is known to have antioxidant, thrombin-inhibitory properties, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. Based on these properties it was postulated that quercetin may an option in fighting the coronavirus at least from the standpoint of preventing COVID-19 from replicating in people with mild COVID-19 symptoms. Additionally, it was hypothesized that subjects treated with Quercetin could have a shorter time to virus clearance within the body, while helping to fight infection and lessen symptoms. Theoretically, people taking quercetin might have milder symptomatology, and decreased probabilities of hospitalization and death.

Quercetin as supplements are also known as Bioflavonoid, Bioflavonoid Extract. Bioflavonoid Complex, Citrus Bioflavonoid, Citrus Bioflavonoid Extract, Citrus Bioflavones, Bioflavonoide, Citrus Bioflavones, Bioflavonoid Concentrate, Flavones de Citron.1

How it works:

Quercetin is abundant in antioxidants that help kill cancerous cells in the body by combatting free radical cells in the body. Quercetin work well with zinc in that the quercetin functions as a transport for zinc into the cell where the zinc may aid to inhibit viral replication. In addition, the abundance of antioxidants helps control blood sugar levels and prevent and reduce allergic reactions.

The abundance of anti-inflammatory properties in quercetin helps reduce inflammation, which is essential in the treatment of arthritis.

Health Benefits:

Reduces inflammation by reducing the levels of the free radicals present to cause inflammation linked to causing various cancers, kidney and heart diseases.
Treats rheumatoid arthritis by significantly reducing stiffness and pain.
Reduces the risk of heart disease by controlling blood sugar levels.
Reversing chronic brain disorders by binding and neutralizing free radicals caused by the brain disorders is hence used to treat degenerative brain disorders such as Alzheimer’s.2
> Aids in exercise performance by increasing the endurance levels of athletes while excising.
Combats allergic reactions to the skin due to its high anti-inflammatory properties, thus providing allergic symptom relief.
Kills-specific cancerous cells due to high antioxidant properties hence used as an alternative cancer treatment for colon, lung, liver, blood, ovarian, lymphoid, and breast cancerous cells.
Prevents infections linked to bacterial causes such as urinary, respiratory, skin, stomach, intestines infections due to antibacterial properties.3

Modified EVMS Protocols:

Prophylaxis:
While there is extremely limited data, the following “cocktail” may have a role in the prevention/mitigation of COVID-19 disease. It should however be noted that a recent publication suggests that melatonin my reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection.
Vitamin C 500 mg BID (twice daily) and Quercetin 250-500 mg BID • Zinc 50-75 mg/day (elemental zinc). Zinc lozenges are preferred. After 1 month, reduce the dose to 30-50 mg/day.
Melatonin (slow release): Begin with 0.3mg and increase as tolerated to 2 mg at night.
Vitamin D3 2000-4000 u/day [18-25].
Optional:
Famotidine 20-40 mg/day.

Symptomatic patients (at home):
Vitamin C 500 mg BID and Quercetin 250-500 mg BID.
Zinc 75-100 mg/day (elemental zinc).
Melatonin 6-12 mg at night (the optimal dose is unknown).
Vitamin D3 2000-4000 u/day.
ASA 81 -325 mg/day (unless contraindicated).
Optional:
Famotidine 20-40 mg/day.
Optional: Ivermectin 150-200 ug/kg orally (dose can be repeated on day 2).
In symptomatic patients, monitoring with home pulse oximetry is recommended.
Baseline or ambulatory desaturation < 94% should prompt hospital admission.

There is not enough evidence to claim that quercetin can prevent or cure COVID-19. However, the antiviral, anti-inflammatory and thrombin-inhibitory properties of quercetin, should be taken into consideration.
