More than 25 million Americans suffer from Type 2 diabetes and for years, diabetes was considered to be a chronic progressive disorder, an irreversible disease. Current thinking is that diabetes can be controlled, reversed and even cured with proper diet and nutrition. By reducing complex carbohydrates, walking, and intermittent fasting, one could help to offset or even prevent the onset of diabetes.
Although limiting the amount of complex carbohydrates is important, there are several studies, one of which was funded by the NIH in 2003, that show that plant-based meals will help to better control you blood glucose and insulin levels better than previously understood. In some of the participants, blood sugars were normalized so well that is was surprising to know that the patient suffered from the disease initially.
Dr. Walker advocates that plant-based diet when combined with intermittent fasting and hydration, could result in curing the disease faster than anyone thing alone.
Intermittent fasting: Simply put, it’s a way of giving your pancreas a break. As you can imagine, each meal small or large forces your pancreas to release insulin in order to maintain a relative normal blood sugar. Now, there is a plethora of data out there that suggests that intermittent fasting could reduce your risk of cancer, could help you live longer, increase mental focus/clarity, but I am simply advocating that giving your pancreas a break is key. There are several ways to begin intermittent fasting but I would like to keep it simple by advocating 16/8 hours; eat normal meals within an 8-hour window and fast the other 16 hours. See Dr. Walker’s help tips.
Physically active: Brisk walking is fun and gets the job done. Most people walk less than 6000 steps per day, however that clearly isn’t doing the job in that there are so many millions of American suffering from diabetes or pre diabetes. Increasing your number steps per day will get you to your weight reduction goal even faster. See Dr. Walker’s help tips.
Hydration: First of all, get rid of all sodas; soda is your enemy. Drinking water helps you to feel full longer and decrease the cravings. Also, as you drink water, energy is required to absorb it so you are in effect burning calories. I recommend drinking ½ gallon of water each day will not only decrease your cravings for food but gets you to your weight loss goals even faster. Drinking this little water will help many people burn calories equivalent to running a slow mile. See Dr. Walker’s help tip on hydration.
