Stroke is one of the causes of death and a leading cause of disability in the United States. A stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is either blocked by a clot or bursts (or ruptures). When that happens, part of the brain cannot get the blood (and oxygen) it needs, leading to the death of brain cells.
Some of the risk factors for stroke:
Older age – After age 55, the chance of having a stroke is doubled.
Race – The African-American population has a greater incidence of high blood pressure.
Gender. A stroke occurs more often in men than women.
History of prior stroke – You are at higher risk for having a second stroke after you have already had a stroke.
Heredity or genetics – The chance of stroke is more significant in people with a family history of stroke.
Other risk factors include Extreme temperature, season, climate, where you live, and social and economic factors.
Several plants have been long used in the management of stroke cases. One is Garlic, a wonder plant with numerous beneficial medicinal properties. It contains a molecule called Ajoene, which prevents blood platelets from accumulating and forming blood clots, which causes a stroke. Garlic and its preparations have been widely recognized as agents for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular and other metabolic diseases, atherosclerosis, hyperlipidemia, thrombosis, hypertension, and diabetes. Many clinical trials have shown Garlic's positive effects on almost all cardiovascular conditions mentioned above. Some of the proven benefits of Garlic in the treatment of stroke include:
• Lowers blood pressure – According to research published in the BMC Cardiovascular Disorders, Garlic enhances the regulation of endothelial nitric oxide, which is known to induce smooth muscle cell relaxation and BP reduction.
• Prevents damage by free radicals –The antioxidant property of Garlic flushes out the free radicals and prevents cell damage that may lead to various heart diseases.
• Lowers blood cholesterol level – Garlic can help decrease the level of bad cholesterol in the body and increase the levels of the good one, according to a study conducted at the Stanford University School of Medicine.
• Helps in thinning the blood – Its strong anticoagulant properties can help prevent clot formation, which is known to cause various heart conditions like heart attack and stroke. It also has Garlic has natural antimicrobial properties.
